I learned the value of working on my business and not just in it from Michael Gerber’s book, The E-Myth Attorney: Why Most Legal Practices Don’t Work and What to Do About It. I was then inspired by Tim Ferris to live a 4-hour workweek. But my business only took off when I forced myself (OK, was forced) to go on vacation.
Honestly, my wife makes me do it. She’s always had the travel bug, and I only had the Travel Channel. I was too busy running a practice. If I didn’t work, I didn’t get paid. (Sometimes even when I did work, I didn’t get paid!). I figured I would enjoy the fruits of my labor someday when I had “made it.”
