Online Ratings, Reviews, Endorsements, Recommendations, Testimonials, Oh My! How to Get Them by Mark Bullock

{2:45 minutes to read} Generally speaking, people are happy to complain if they have a problem with a product or service. It’s human nature. Someone is far more likely to go out of their way to criticize than to endorse or compliment. Because of this, as a business owner, you have to take a proactive stance with your online reputation

In part 1 of this series, we mentioned gathering testimonials. In addition to client testimonials, a few other examples include character endorsements. But how do you get people to give you those testimonials, positive ratings, and/or reviews online?

The short answer is simply—you need to ask them to do so!

1. Find those closest to you—who know, like, and trust you—and are willing to say a few positive words on your behalf.

2. Have them give you a 5 star review.

3. Make it simple for them by providing them the links to your:

a. LinkedIn company page & personal profile;

b. Google Plus company page;

c. Yelp profile;

d. FaceBook company page;

e. YouTube / Vimeo;

f. Leave positive comments on Blog Articles;

g. If possible—reviews & ratings on association & industry directories; and

h. Then give them clear & simple instructions on what to do when they get there.

Be sure to specify with your friends to select a 5-star rating/review. Anything less than this starts to pull down from that five star. For example, if you got one 5 star and one 4 star, then you’re at 4 1/2 stars. If somebody comes in and rates you as 1 star, it’s going to take multiple 5 stars to pull your rating back up.

Keep in mind, you need to speak to people individually to request this kind of favor.

Perhaps most importantly, and in the spirit of reciprocity, ask for links / seek out these people’s company pages and offer to give them positive endorsements, reviews, and ratings as well.

Consider the following:

Has anyone ever said anything nice about your service and/or character?

After expressing appreciation for the compliment—did you ask them if you could use their kind words on your website and/or social media platforms as a testimonial/endorsement?

If not, those individuals are another great source to gather important testimonials/endorsements!
