We all know that it’s best to open with a question or a bold statement. The next level from that is is that if that question or bold statement helps the audience to self -identify with what you have to offer. And there’s another level to that.

Hi, I’m Mark Bullock. I’m the co -founder of Videosocials.net and phoneBlogger.net . And that level is something you can’t use all the time but when you use it, it has a tremendous psychological impact. And it’s very simple. It’s what mistakes do they need to avoid. Think about that for a minute.

So, we all… pursuit of pleasure, avoidance of pain, right? And… and given the fact that we’ll put more energy and thought into avoidance of pain than anything else, mistakes are pain points. Mistakes are pain that we want to avoid. So, online, it’s a tremendously valuable statement.

So, mistakes to avoid as part of your opening statement, whether that be three or five, something like that — I don’t recommend more than that for a three -minute video — but three is usually a really good number. Odd numbers are better than even numbers — a lot of people don’t realize that. The only difference is … variance from that is Top 10, right? Thanks to a certain late night show host, Top 10 would work. Problem is you can’t fit 10 points into a three -minute video, so stick with three. The odd number helps, again psychologically, for people to realize that maybe it’s real versus it’s something that you contrived — in comparison to, you know, four ways, etc.

That’s pretty much it. Just consider the fact that if you can work from a standpoint of — and literally state it as — mistakes to avoid in whatever circumstance, whatever that you’re doing — and frame your content within how to avoid those mistakes, I think you’ll be surprised at just how many people perk up and will watch that video.
