Where Do the Email Addresses Come From for Your Newsletter List by Mark Bullock

{2:30 minutes to read} Consistent, educational, (and non-self-promotional) newsletters are an integral part of your online marketing strategy. One of the initial challenges for many entrepreneurs is building a mailing list.

Where Do the Email Addresses Come From?

Your Email Program

An obvious place to start is your email program: Outlook, Gmail, Thunderbird, etc. Many people are unaware that they have the ability to export the addresses, which include not only your stored contacts but also any address that you’ve received an email from or sent email to. Because not every valuable contact gets stored, this inclusive list is very valuable.

Social Media

Social media profiles, specifically LinkedIn, will allow you to export the contact information for all of your contacts. For many, this group can range from 500 to 5,000 connections, so a considerable list will form as a result.

In addition, social media ad promotion like a boosted post on Facebook is another way to collect new email addresses.

Subscription Box/Lead Generation

A more traditional way of creating a contact list is to create an ethical bribe on your website, i.e. a giveaway, like an informational PDF, in return for a sign-up to your mailing list.

Professional Organizations & Seminars

Industry associations often have mailing lists — this type of list is useful, but it is important to ensure that you have permission to use the addresses.

Moreover, any time that you speak or present on a topic, remember to collect email addresses and names from your attendees so you can follow-up with them on an ongoing basis. They’ve already come to hear you speak and are clearly interested in what you do.
